Derbyshire Dialect
Some words and phrases contained in the Poetry Collection - "Words of a Derbyshire Poet"
and in the Derbyshire Dialect Dictionary - "Words of the White Peak."
"Ay up, surrey, I 'anna seed thi fer wiks!" - Hello, friend, I haven't seen you for weeks!"
"Dus thee non know thi Durbysheer?" - Dot you not know your Derbyshire?
"Th'art as lesh as a pigtruff!" - "You're as smooth as a pig trough." Lesh means smooth.
A phrase to make any girl's heart melt, a really good chat-up line.
"Youn ayther 'af'fert' arter, ur ilse youn 'af'fert flit!" - "You'll either have to alter, or else you'll have to go!" A phrase to make idle members of the family get up in the morning. Flitting means going away, or moving house.
"Eet's bin flinkerin' , an nair eet's putherin' wi snow, an am raight clusummedt!"
"It's been dropping a few flakes, and now it's blizzarding with snow, and I'm really frozen with cold!"
"Al sithee, ar moun mek tracks fer wom!" I'll see you again, I have to go home!"
Huckrel - A young lady, if not of doubtful morals, then of questionable virtue.
Borsen - Grossly overweight.
